How This Works

Wind chill (below 10°C, wind above 4.8 km/h): JAG/TI formula = 13.12 + 0.6215T − 11.37V^0.16 + 0.3965TV^0.16, where T = air temp °C, V = wind speed km/h. Heat index (above 27°C): Rothfusz regression equation using temperature and relative humidity. Between these ranges, feels-like ≈ actual temperature.

Wind removes the thin layer of warm air your body creates around itself (boundary layer). The faster the wind, the more rapidly this insulating layer is stripped away, and your skin loses heat faster. Wind does not actually lower air temperature — a thermometer in the wind reads the same as one sheltered from it. Wind chill describes the rate of heat loss from exposed skin, not a lower ambient temperature.
