How This Works

Frost dates are climate averages from Met Office and RHS data. The growing season is defined as the frost-free period between last spring frost and first autumn frost. Regional variation in the UK is significant — Cornwall has a growing season ~20 weeks longer than Highland Scotland. Hardiness zones follow RHS classification (H1–H7, where H7 is very hardy and H1 is frost-tender).

For northern UK and short seasons: prioritise fast-maturing varieties. Lettuce, radishes, spinach and pak choi from seed to harvest in 4–6 weeks. Courgettes produce prolifically from mid-June to October. Climbing beans, beetroot, and chard all perform well. Use RHS-recommended short-season varieties. Start tender plants indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost date. Fleece and cloches add 2–4°C and extend the season significantly.
