How This Works

Conversions: 1 mph = 1.60934 km/h = 0.8689 knots = 0.44704 m/s. The Beaufort scale (Francis Beaufort, 1805) classifies wind from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane force) based on observable effects on land and sea. Originally developed for sailing ship navigation, it remains in use by meteorologists worldwide.

High-sided vehicles (lorries, caravans) are affected from about 50 km/h (Force 6) — sway noticeably. Cars can be pushed off course above 70–80 km/h (Force 7–8). Bridges often have specific wind speed restrictions posted. Met Office Amber wind warnings (75+ km/h) mean significant disruption is likely. During named storms, follow National Highways advice on route closures.
